Margaret Okayo
Kenya
154cm44kg
Age: 29
|
Okayo's successful
career as a professional runner started when she placed second
in the Chicago Marathon in 1999. She came in the third in the
New York City Marathon in 2000 and won the New York City Marathon
in 2001. In the Boston Marathon in 2002, she beat the then
world-record holder in the women's marathon, Ndereba (Kenya),
and won the gold medal with a time of 2:20:43, which attracted
worldwide attention.
She finished most races over the last few years either in first
place or as a medal winner and established a reputation for
consistent strength. Okayo surpassed many strong Kenyan runners
to be selected as a marathon team member for the Athens Olympics.
She placed fourth in this year's London Marathon.
This is her second appearance in the Sendai International Marathon
in the last two years since her first entry in the race in
2003. She will undoubtedly excite the fans along the road with
her persistence as she did in competition with veteran runners
of the world in the past. 154 cm 44 kg Born in 1976 Age: 29

Tegla Loroupe

Age: 32

Her first victory
in the marathon came in the New York City Marathon in 1994.
She won the same race for the second consecutive time the following
year in 1995. She went on to win the Rotterdam Marathon in
1997 and 1998 establishing the then world record in the process.
In the 1999 Berlin Marathon, she won in a world record time
of 2:20:43 solidifying her status as the queen of the women's
marathon.
Besides the marathon, she is a strong competitor in the 10000
m, competing in three consecutive Olympic games starting with
Barcelona in 1992 and four consecutive World Track and Field
Championships since 1993 in Stuttgart. In the 2000 Sydney Olympics,
she became the first female athlete in history to run in a
track and field event and a road race.
This is her second consecutive appearance in the Sendai International
Marathon since 2004. Her goal is to refine her run and win
her second successive championship. The highlight will be a
neck-and-neck race with M. Okayo, which will probably last
into the closing stage. 153 cm 40 kg Born in 1973 Age: 32
