Tegla Loroupe
Kenya
153cm 40kg
Age:30
|
| Loroupe made a sensational
marathon debut, winning the 1994 New York City Marathon. She
won back-to-back titles in this event in 1995, and then, the
victory in the 1997 Rotterdam Marathon was added in her glorious
history. She finally established the women’s world best record
(at that time) in the same event in 1998 with a time of 2:20:47.
Furthermore, in September 1999, she clocked 2:20:43 at the Berlin
Marathon, breaking by four seconds the women's marathon world
record she had set in Rotterdam 16 months earlier. Great achievements
as such have stabilized her status as a queen of the women’s
marathon.
She has displayed a remarkable gift not only for marathon
but also for 10000m. Being selected as a representative athlete
from Kenya by way of extremely fierce competition, she has
appeared in three consecutive Olympic Games starting from
the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. She has also joined four consecutive
World Track and Field Championships since the 1993 Stuttgart
Event. There she became a '95 and '99 10,000-meter bronze
medalist and also became a prize-winner four times, displaying
her solid power.
In the Sydney Olympics, she became the first woman runner
who participated in both track and road events, finished 5th
in the 10000m race and finishing 13th in marathon.
She is very experienced runner in half marathon as well.
She made two consecutive wins in Tokyo City Half Marathon
in 1995 and 1996, which was followed by the 2nd place finish
in the same event in 1997. Additionally, she secured three
consecutive wins in the World Half-Marathon Championship from
1997 to 1999. Her personal best for half marathon is 1:07:32.
Recently, she actively participates in Japanese events, such
as the 2003 Miyazaki Women’s Road with the 22nd place finish
and the 2003 Kobe All Japan Women’s Half Marathon finishing
2nd in a time of 1:11:53. Loroupe, who is in her thirties
now, is expected to display her skillfulness in running.

Alene Emere
ARACO Corporation
185cm 63kg
Age: 21
|
| Emere joined
ARACO Corporation in 2001. He is a speed runner who is good
at track events, especially 5000m and 10000m. Recently, he devotes
himself to altitude training to enhance stamina, which helps
him to increase strength in running uphill and downhill.
He is a young promising runner who can aim at the 2004 Athens
Olympics marathon as a representative from Ethiopia
His training effort is beginning to bear fruit these days.
Leaving other runners far behind, he won the half marathon
race in the 2003 Fukui Marathon in October in a time of 1:03:30.
A month later, he finished 2nd in the 2003 Nagoya Half Marathon
in 1:01:46. This record was only 5 seconds behind the winner.
The fact that he has established very impressive record in
spite of having injured his leg in training camp just before
the race shows a sample of his genius. As he is still a young
runner, he is expected to develop his natural abilities furthermore.
Here in Sendai, he will be sure to show us strongly motivated
running aiming at the finish line ambitiously.

Tsutomu Hiroyama, her coach and her husband, also participated
